While navigating the awkward return of a disgruntled Brandon Ingram alongside Gradey Dick presents a difficult roster dynamic, paying that temporary price is far better than absorbing the catastrophic financial and draft risks tied to Leonard’s ongoing legal and league scrutiny.
11 months ago, Pablo Torre shook the sports world when he revealed the possibility that the Clippers circumvented the salary cap in order to pay Leonard more than was legally allowable. Fast forward to today and the investigation is still ongoing and could even extend to 2027 according to reports from ESPN.
The Halting of a Blockbuster Trade
This has created an uncomfortable scenario on the Raptors end, who had earlier announced the return of Kawhi via trade in June. They would later decide to put the trade on hold until the situation was resolved. Completing the trade would have meant absorbing the risk of any punishment for Leonard.
What does that mean? The Raptors obviously won’t get the Clippers punishment. But Leonard could face fines and/or a voided contract. A voided contract is the absolute worst case Kawhi Leonard scenario because it means Toronto would have lost their two unprotected first-rounders, a pick swap, and two second-rounders for nothing.
Worst Case Kawhi Leonard Scenario Avoided, But At What Cost?
The Clippers know they got a good haul for Leonard in the trade with two unprotected first rounders deep into the future and a swap for a 35-year-old injury-prone Leonard. Perhaps this delay will cause the Clippers to remove an asset or two to get the Raptors to complete the transaction and absorb the risk. It remains to be seen if Toronto will come back to the negotiation table.
For now, Toronto’s front office faces an awkward roster dynamic. Holding onto Brandon Ingram on a short-term timeline while waiting out league arbitration creates unnecessary locker room tension. However, paying the price of a moody Brandon Ingram remains vastly preferable to surrendering premier future draft assets for an asset that could disappear overnight.
