LOS ANGELES — With training camp officially opening next week, general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed that the front office is exploring every available avenue to solve an impending Lakers roster crunch before opening night.
Speaking alongside head coach JJ Redick at the UCLA Health Training Center during their annual pre-season media availability, Pelinka clarified that the organization will allow training camp scrimmages and six preseason games to unfold before finalizing the regular-season group.
Under NBA rules, teams can carry up to 21 players through camp, but must trim down to a maximum of 15 standard contracts before the season opener against the Golden State Warriors. With 16 players currently holding guaranteed deals following late-summer additions, Los Angeles is forced to eliminate at least one salary slot.
“To some extent, going from 16 guys to 15 guys, we have until opening night for the competition to sort of play out and see who the best 15 players are,” Rob Pelinka explained. “Behind that evaluation of who’s emerging in camp, there’s also consolidation trades that could still be looked at — trading two guys out, bringing one in.”

This extended timeline places immense pressure on holdovers and recent additions during training camp. Players fighting for the final rotation spots behind stars Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves are not just competing for minutes, but effectively auditioning to keep their roster spots or serve as trade capital before the final October deadline. The trade block candidates include Jaden Hardy, Dalton Knecht, Bronny James and Jarred Vanderbilt.
