CHARLOTTE —Just days before opening night tip-off against Brooklyn, Jeff Peterson and the Charlotte Hornets front office made their biggest financial commitment of the offseason. Right at the rookie extension deadline, Charlotte agreed to a massive five-year, $209 million Brandon Miller contract extension to secure their young star long-term.
Reported by Shams Charania of ESPN through Miller’s representatives AJ Vaynerchuk and Joey Middleton at VaynerSports, the maximum deal locks in the former second overall pick through the 2031 season. Coming off a standout campaign where he averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, Miller has officially been handed the keys to the franchise after Charlotte cleared the deck by trading away LaMelo Ball.
Clearing The Deck
When you break down the timing, this move represents a shift in a new direction for the Charlotte Hornets. By trading away LaMelo Ball earlier this summer, the front office signaled that the keys to the franchise were being handed directly to Miller.
Miller has been a complete three-level scorer since stepping onto the floor in Charlotte, flashing smooth scoring, lethal three-point shooting, and improving playmaking. Even while working through offseason shoulder surgery that kept him limited during parts of camp, the organization never hesitated to offer the full rookie maximum.
Why Agreeing To The Brandon Miller Contract Extension Was An Absolute No Brainer
In this new cautious environment created by the CBA, paying $41.8 million annually to a 23-year-old wing is the standard cost of keeping a franchise cornerstone. Wings who can shoot near 38 percent from deep on high volume while defending multiple positions do not hit the open market, making this deal a foundational step for Charlotte’s rebuild.
Pairing Miller alongside second-year sensation Kon Knueppel gives Charlotte one of the most intriguing young wing duos in the Eastern Conference. As Charlotte opens its campaign on Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets, securing this deal further solidifies Miller as the unquestioned face of the franchise for the next decade.
